Alpaca is strong and long-lasting when you treat it gently. Here is how to keep your pieces soft for years.

Washing alpaca clothing (ponchos, sweaters, gloves, socks)

• Wash only when needed. Alpaca resists odors, and airing it out is often enough.
• Hand wash in cold or lukewarm water with a mild detergent or baby shampoo. Soak for 3 to 5 minutes.
• Never wring, twist or scrub. Gently press out the water.
• Roll the piece in a towel to remove extra water, then lay it flat to dry away from direct heat and sun.
• Do not hang wet alpaca; it can stretch. Do not use a dryer.

Alpaca stuffed animals

• Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth.
• Brush the fur gently with your fingers to keep it fluffy.
• Do not put them in the washing machine.

Kids' cardigans

Hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry.

Storing

Fold (don't hang) your alpaca pieces and store them in a cool, dry place. A cedar block helps keep moths away.
